My "Little" Flutist

Morning came early today for a Saturday - after a late night of skiing with her friends (and her brother) in the school Ski Club, SH had to get up and out early to go to Honors Band Tryouts - the Catholic School equivalent of All-State Band. She was tagged by the Wind Ensemble instructor to try out with a handful of other students. She's been practicing religiously (no pun intended, well, maybe a little pun) for a couple months. I found out during tryouts, from a wonderfully informed and helpful parent, that they only have this band every other year, so she really only has 2 chances to make it. They had to play scales, sight read, then play the chosen piece. She came back all smiles - scored a perfect score on her scales, said she did better on the sight reading than she thought she would, and went into the practiced piece with confidence. She said the judges were "nice old ladies" (what, maybe 40 or 50? HA) who were very complementary. Whether she makes it or not, I am, of course, very proud. She worked hard and came out pleased with her performance. Each attempt gives her a little more experience, a little more confidence. There were a nice group of kids there from her school, all of whom she knew. They supported each other and seemed to be having a good time - despite the early hour. I am thrilled for her and proud of her work ethic. She finds out the results Monday - everybody say a prayer!
